Intro German 11 - Wach auf!

Today we learned how to write commands; we took notes and did exercises together. I also handed back questions 7-11 from chapter 8 at the beginning of class.

Tomorrow, we'll spend the first part of the class studying and preparing for the chapter 8 test which we'll do in the second half of class tomorrow.

English 12 -- Visit #2 next day!

Three things to work on today:
1. Work on your children's literature project today -- 1/2 page of your story text is due tomorrow.
2. 1984 -- Read to p. 146 by tomorrow
3. 1984 - Pink Handout about Winston Smith due tomorrow (many students have already handed it in but for several students it is for homework).

Remember, we'll visit CPE tomorrow!

English 12 -- Winston is slipped a piece of paper

We reviewed the end of Part 1 and the very beginning of Part 2. I handed back last week's 1984 work.

Several students still have outstanding work to be completed. I will continue to accept this work this week but since much of it is so late, it will only receive a maximum of C+. You can find out what work needs completing by looking at the updated marks page that was posted last week (i.e. scroll down to find).

HOMEWORK: Read to p. 146 by Wednesday.
Half-page rough copy of story due on Wednesday also.

Remember, on Wednesday we'll be visiting CPE for visit #2.

Today we took notes on personal pronouns and worked on p. 247 questions 12 13 14. They should be completed for homework if not done.

Intro German 11 -- Rollenspiel

Today we completed the Rollenspiel on p. 238.

English 12- Fun with Dick and Jane

Today I gave a lesson on children's literature. We read a number of examples and I explained to students several essential elements of children's lit (e.g. the point of view most often used, the kinds of conflicts, the parallel structure often used). Two handouts were given out that summarized my main points.

Homework: a half page rough copy of the story will be due for Wednesday's class.

Students were also encouraged to begin reading part 2 of 1984. I will be going over and discussing the first part of Part 2 on Monday.

Intro German 11 -- Damn the irregular verb!

Notes on Verbs with Stem Vowel Changes -- completed questions 7-11 from chapter 8 and handed them in.

During the second half of class we worked quietly while 7 of our classmates wrote unit tests that they recently missed.

English 12 -- Little Buddy Visit

We visited CPE and met our little buddies (we even had recess with them!).
Tomorrow I'll present a lesson on children's literature that will form the basis of what you'll need to do in your project.
At the end of class, we wrote a quiz on Part 1 of 1984.

Britt, I paired you up with a grade 4 named Kaeson who happens to be in Mexico until June 6th! Your book, then, won't be very personalized since you won't meet the boy (I'm guessing he's a boy?) until the 16th.

Intro German 11 -- Ein guten Fahrt!

Today students completed and handed in the first four questions of chapter 8. We also wrote down the chapter 8 spelling list.

Next class -- verbs with stem vowel changes AND students who have unit tests that have not been written, can write them.

English 12 -- Winston visits a "nunnery"

Today we reviewed 1984 up to the end of ch. 5. I read the opening of chapter 6 where Winston reveals that he is married.

Students are to complete questions from ch. 3-5 for Thursday: as well students need to read to the end of Part 1 for Thursday's class.

I also reminded students that we will be going to CPE on Thursday morning to begin our Children's Lit project.

Britt, how's your ski camp? Hope all is well. As much as you can (and I bet you can't), take it easy.

English 12 -- Little Buddies and Big Brother

Today we chatted about students' perception of the English 12 provincial exam from last day.

Then we discussed and I explained the children's lit project (next Thursday we visit CPE to begin this project).

Finally we finished class by discussing the world of Winston Smith (we highlighted his work and the brutality that Party Members have become accustomed to -- like enjoying the weekly hangings of Eurasian prisoners).

Homework -- read to the end of chapter 5 for next class.

Intro German 11 - Geburtstag!

Today we took intro notes for chapter 8 and we completed the first two questions. Last day we studied (first half); then completed the chapter 7 test.

Intro German 11 -- kapitel 7 future tense

Today we wrote down the spelling list for our chapter 7 test (the test will be second half on Wednesday's class).

We also reviewed the future tense and learned about German shopping centres (Kaufhaüser).

English 12 - The junior anti-sex league

Today we discussed the opening chapter of Orwell's 1984. Students were given an opening assignment where they grouped elements into the categories of hope, government, geography, propaganda, crime-enforcement.

Quiz to the end of ch. 3 tomorrow.

Final exam on Thursday morning.

English 12 -- 1984

Today I shared with students how they can find past provincial exams online from which to study, leading up to their final exam on May 19th next week.

Today we also began 1984. Read to end of ch. 1 by Monday's class and to end of chapter 3 by Tuesday's class

Intro German 11

Today I marked last day's work (chapter 7, 8-12) and handed it back.

Today we learned the future tense verb (werden) and completed number 16-17 from chapter 7.

English 12

Last day I was absent and Ms. Walsh had the class complete questions to the article "A Radical Road map". This was handed in at the end of class.

There still are a dozen or so students who have not handed in all their ted talk work.

Today we began by looking at Poe's poem A Dream Within a Dream. Then we moved on to the movie Stand By Me and learned about the sub-genre, Bildungsroman. Students completed a worksheet on the video and handed it in. Some took the sheet home to finish it up -- it's homework and due next day.

English 12 -- Old exam topics

Today we handed in our Ted Talks work. Only a handful were handed in. Students, please get this work in asap.

We worked through past exam topics in pairs, figuring out different ways to come up with original writing ideas.

No homework (TedTalk work, though, is still due from many students).

Intro German 11 -- kapitel 7 rollenspiel

Today we reviewed the verb gefallen. I handed back the work you did last day (3,4 chapter 7).

We completed the Rollenspiel in chapter 7.

English 12 -- Ted talks last day

Today is the last day that we'll be working on our Ted.com unit. Student compositions are due on Monday along with two sets of notes.

Intro German 11 -- Wie gefällt dir das?

We marked part of the chapter 6 unit test that we wrote yesterday, and wrote down opening notes for chapter 7. We completed the first four questions of chapter 7 (these were handed in) and watched the chapter 5 video.
No homework was given!

English 12 -- poetry practice in pairs

Students practiced their poetry skills by reading and interpreting the January 2000 provincial exam poem "Death Over Water."

English 12 -- Ted talks in the library

Today we held most of our class in the library: students watched Ted talks and worked on their notes and/or composition.

Tentative deadline for the Tedtalks notes and composition is Monday, May 9th.

Intro German 11 -- Das schmeckt mir nicht

Today we reviewed the three main grammatical points of chapter 6. We will write our chapter 6 test tomorrow. Viel Glück! (lots of luck!)
